The Cough-Assist Philips Respironics T70 is an effective, safe, and simple Mechanical Insufflation-Exsufflation Device.
The Cough Assist Machine helps to clear secretions from the lungs by helping you with your breathing. When you breathe in (inspiration), the machine gives you air (positive pressure) to help expand your lungs.
When you blow out (expiration), the machine creates a sucking force (negative pressure) that pulls the air out of your lungs.
This rapid change in pressure during the different phases of breathing (inspiration and expiration) helps make your cough stronger and more effective.
What Conditions Does the Cough-Assist Treat?
The Cough-Assist has been proven effective for patients with an insufficient ability to cough due to:
• Poliomyelitis
• Muscular Dystrophy
• Spinal Muscular Atrophy
• Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
• Myasthenia Gravis
• Guillain-Barre Syndrome
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Or any other neurological disorder with some paralysis of the respiratory muscles, such as a spinal cord injury
How Does Cough-Assist Help Patients?
The Cough Assist helps patients to take a larger than normal breaths to open more areas of the lungs than normal respiration, and holding that breath at a momentary plateau.
Then, when the machine assists the patient while exhaling, the Cough-Assist has a forceful, active exhalation instead of the normal passive exhalation.

This action helps to move any secretions towards the larger airways, hopefully initiating a productive cough. The removal of stagnant secretions has been shown to help cut down on repeat hospitalization for these patients by helping to keep their airways clearer from secretions.
